How to get to Tanzania
Getting to Tanzania is easier than you might think, with multiple international flight options and convenient connections from major global hubs. The country has three main international airports: Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) near Arusha and Moshi, Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam, and Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) in Zanzibar.
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is the gateway for most travelers heading to northern Tanzania, including Mount Kilimanjaro treks, Serengeti safaris, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire National Park. Major airlines such as KLM, Qatar Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Turkish Airlines, and Kenya Airways offer regular flights into JRO from Europe, the Middle East, and other parts of Africa.
Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) serves as the main hub for visitors to southern Tanzania or those entering from Asia or Southern Africa. It’s a major stop for regional carriers and is often used for connecting flights to Zanzibar, Ruaha, Selous (Nyerere National Park), and other southern destinations.
If you’re heading straight to the beach, Zanzibar’s international airport (ZNZ) receives direct flights from regional cities like Nairobi, Addis Ababa, and Doha, as well as seasonal charters from Europe.
For travelers already in East Africa, regional flights between Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda are frequent and affordable. Road transfers are also possible from Kenya into northern Tanzania, particularly for those combining a Kenyan safari with a Tanzanian one.
Most travelers will need a tourist visa, which can be obtained on arrival or online. It’s recommended to arrange airport transfers in advance, as many safari and tour packages include pickup directly from the airport.
