5-day Tanzania Safari to Lake Manyara, Lake Natron, Lake Eyasi & Ngorongoro Crater

Day 1: Arusha to Lake Manyara National Park – Safari Among Forests and Flamingos

Your safari begins with a drive from Arusha to Lake Manyara National Park, one of Tanzania’s most diverse and picturesque parks. As you enter, you’ll be welcomed by thick groundwater forests where baboons, blue monkeys, and elephants roam beneath the towering mahogany and fig trees. The park opens up into woodlands, grassy plains, and eventually to the shimmering alkaline lake—home to thousands of flamingos, pelicans, and storks. During your game drive, keep an eye out for the park’s legendary tree-climbing lions resting in the acacia branches. After a picnic lunch inside the park and more game viewing, head to your lodge in the nearby town of Mto wa Mbu or Karatu.

  • Overnight: Lodge or camp near Lake Manyara
  • Meals: Lunch and Dinner

Day 2: Lake Manyara to Lake Natron – Journey to the Land of Fire and Flamingos

After breakfast, depart for the remote and strikingly beautiful Lake Natron, located in northern Tanzania near the Kenyan border. The drive takes you past small Maasai villages, lava fields, and dramatic escarpments, with views of Ol Doinyo Lengai, the “Mountain of God” and Tanzania’s only active volcano. Arrive in the afternoon and check into your camp nestled in the wild, lunar-like landscape. Explore the lake’s shoreline on foot with a local guide, where you’ll witness surreal pink reflections and huge flocks of flamingos, who breed here in the mineral-rich waters. In the evening, enjoy a guided walk to the nearby Ngare Sero Waterfalls, where you can cool off in the refreshing cascades after a scenic trek through a narrow gorge.

  • Overnight: Rustic eco-camp or lodge near Lake Natron
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Day 3: Lake Natron to Lake Eyasi – Cross Tribal Lands to Ancient Cultures

Rise early for a final walk along the lake or simply enjoy the peaceful sunrise over Ol Doinyo Lengai. After breakfast, begin your overland journey to Lake Eyasi, located on the southern edge of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This lesser-visited region is a cultural treasure, home to the Hadzabe and Datoga tribes. Arrive in time for a visit to a Datoga community, where you’ll learn about their blacksmithing traditions and pastoral lifestyle. Watch the men craft tools from scrap metal using ancient techniques, and meet the women adorned in leather garments and intricate beadwork. Settle in for the evening and prepare for an immersive cultural experience the next day.

  • Overnight: Lodge or camp near Lake Eyasi
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Day 4: Lake Eyasi Cultural Experience – Drive to Ngorongoro Highlands

Set out before sunrise to join the Hadzabe tribe on a traditional morning hunt. The Hadzabe are among the last remaining hunter-gatherers in Africa, and they still live off the land as their ancestors did for thousands of years. Participate in their daily routine, learning how they use bows, arrows, and foraged plants to survive in this dry environment. Return to camp for breakfast, then continue your journey toward the Ngorongoro Highlands. Along the way, you’ll pass lush plantations, crater lakes, and high-altitude forests. Arrive in the afternoon at your lodge perched on the Ngorongoro rim or nestled in the verdant town of Karatu.

  • Overnight: Lodge or camp on the crater rim or in Karatu
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater Safari – Return to Arusha

Today is the grand finale of your journey—a full-day safari inside the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater, one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife destinations. After an early breakfast, descend 600 meters into the caldera, a collapsed volcano teeming with over 25,000 animals. The crater floor offers some of the best chances to see the Big Five in one place, including lions, elephants, buffaloes, and the rare black rhino. As you explore this Eden-like environment, you’ll also encounter hyenas, zebras, wildebeest, flamingos, and hippos. Enjoy a scenic picnic lunch by a waterhole before ascending and beginning the drive back to Arusha, where your unforgettable cultural and wildlife safari concludes.
