6-Day Kilimanjaro Climb – Marangu Route

Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,870m) to Mandara Hut (2,700m)

Distance: 8 km | Time: 4–5 hours | Zone: Rainforest

After registration at Marangu Gate, begin your trek through lush rainforest. The trail ascends steadily with scenic forest views and opportunities to see blue monkeys and exotic birds. You’ll reach Mandara Hut by afternoon. Optional short walk to Maundi Crater for views of Kenya’s Amboseli Plains.

  • Overnight: Mandara Hut (dorm-style cabins)

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Distance: 12 km | Time: 6–8 hours | Zone: Moorland

Depart the forest and enter the moorland zone with sweeping views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The trail winds through heather and volcanic landscapes. Arrive at Horombo Hut, set in a scenic valley. This is a key acclimatization stop.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut (Optional Hike to Zebra Rocks – 4,000m)

Distance: 5 km round-trip | Time: 2–3 hours

This day helps your body adjust to the altitude. Take a short acclimatization hike to Zebra Rocks, named for their black-and-white striped volcanic formations. Return to Horombo for rest and preparation.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,700m)

Distance: 10 km | Time: 5–7 hours | Zone: Alpine Desert

Trek through an otherworldly alpine desert toward the base of Kibo Peak. The trail is dry and dusty with sparse vegetation. Arrive at Kibo Hut, your base for the summit attempt. After an early dinner, rest before the midnight summit push.

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Descend to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Distance: 20 km | Time: 12–14 hours | Zone: Arctic to Moorland

Begin the summit trek around midnight, climbing slowly past Hans Meyer Cave and reaching Gilman’s Point (5,685m) at sunrise. Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After summit photos, descend carefully back to Kibo, then on to Horombo Hut for your final night on the mountain.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate – Return to Arusha or Moshi

Distance: 20 km | Time: 5–7 hours | Zone: Rainforest

Descend through moorland and lush rainforest to Marangu Gate. After receiving your summit certificate, return to your lodge in Moshi or Arusha for a well-earned shower and rest.
