Saadani National Park

Overview

Saadani National Park is Tanzania’s only wildlife sanctuary where the Indian Ocean meets the savannah, offering a one-of-a-kind bush and beach safari experience. Situated on the Tanzanian coast between Dar es Salaam and Tanga, this 1,100-square-kilometer park blends coastal charm with thrilling wildlife encounters, making it an ideal destination for those who want the best of both worlds—game drives by day and ocean breezes by night.

What makes Saadani truly unique is its diversity. Where else can you watch elephants browsing near a palm-fringed beach, or see giraffes against a backdrop of crashing ocean waves? The park is home to classic safari species like lions, buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles, and a wide variety of antelope, as well as marine life, mangroves, and rich birdlife. Whether you’re arriving by boat from Zanzibar or driving from Dar es Salaam, Saadani offers an adventurous, crowd-free safari experience on the Swahili Coast.

Activities in Saadani

Best Time to Visit

Saadani is open year-round, but certain months offer more rewarding safari conditions:

  • June to October (Dry Season): Best for wildlife viewing; animals concentrate around water sources, and the weather is dry and sunny.

  • November to April (Green Season): Lush scenery and excellent birding, but some inland roads may become muddy or impassable.

  • May: Transitional period; fewer visitors and good visibility as the park dries out after the long rains.

Saadani is ideal for short safaris from Dar es Salaam, or as a complement to Zanzibar beach holidays, thanks to its boat and road access from both destinations.
