Saanane Island National Park
Overview
Located in the heart of Lake Victoria, just a short boat ride from Mwanza city, Saanane Island National Park is Tanzania’s smallest national park — but it offers a surprisingly rich and unique safari experience.
Covering just over 2 square kilometers, the island park is perfect for a day trip, especially for travelers with limited time or those wanting a more relaxed introduction to wildlife.
Saanane was designated a national park in 2013 and is the only national park in Tanzania located within a city’s limits.
It blends natural beauty, diverse wildlife, and panoramic lake views — all in a compact, accessible setting.

Best Time to Visit
Saanane can be visited year-round, thanks to its mild climate and easy access. However, the dry season (June to October) offers better visibility and a more pleasant experience for walking and wildlife viewing.
The park is perfect for visitors already in Mwanza or anyone looking to combine lake scenery with a light safari adventure.
